A self-taught guitarist, part-time beatmaker and occasional poet, Ego Ella May's talents are far from limited within music due to her natural flare and passion to learn. Listed as one of MOBO's 'Artists On The Rise' alongside fellow homegrown talents Kwabs, Shakka and Tawiah, Ego possesses vocal versatility, which enables her to scat and freestyle over her music with seemingly effortless finesse.
Releasing her debut EP, The Tree, in March of last year, the project helped to construe Ella's many talents to the world, with Soul Culture describing her self written and co-produced debut 6 track EP to boast "a rich, hypnotic and eclectic sound" with her "soul drenched vocals, rich neo-soul and jazz influenced soundscapes, instrumentation and ear grabbing lyrics" being appreciated by all that pressed play.
“To me, trees represent standing tall, knowing your roots, being humbled by your surroundings, working hard to bear your fruits." Ego said. "Some seasons they look so bare and other times they’re blossoming with colour. A bit like us humans. I pretty much live by that so thought it was a fitting title.”
Last year also saw the release of her stunning debut music video, Love Hard, which premiered with internationally renowned digital music publication, Hypetrak. Which, according toEarmilk, was the perfect example of how the music she makes can touch a variety of genres from soul and electro, to R&B, as she effortlessly combines them all together to create an eclectic mix that really makes her stand out from most of the other up-and-coming vocalists in the UK.
"With complex vocal melodies that show off the extent of her vocal range, to the soulful adlibs she delivers in-between verses, they all point towards this new sound that has been inspiring a lot of artists the past couple of years." - Earmilk
Now ready to release her new project, Breathing Underwater, in February, the forthcoming EP will conform all that take a listen into supporting her movement, pulsating the eardrums of all that press play.
