While You Were Sleeping, José James’ fifth album, explores his influences which run the gamut from Frank Ocean and James Blake to Nirvana and Radiohead. In his recognition as an artist known for intermixing jazz and hip-hop, James tapped into the potential of his other musical influences to create a truly unconventional album. The opening track, "Angel", is a rock introduction where James' vocal texture makes the song less aggressive and surprisingly sensual. While You Were Sleeping is exploratory in its own right but James still sounds most impressive in the genre he is most known for. Al Green’s "Simply Beautiful" gets the James’ treatment along with trumpeter and composer Takuya Koruda that gives the standard an uptempo, celebratory feel. Make sure to listen to the title track "While You Were Sleeping" and "U R The 1" which easily showcase the range of sounds that James captures on the album. With this album, José James is wasting no time in evolving his sound that remains fresh in the stagnancy of musical genres and as listeners, we can always appreciate constant change.
