Early Riser, the first album from Brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, DJ and live musician Taylor McFerrin, is a bit of a misnomer. Listeners are going to get an eargasm of sensual R&B, jazz, and electronica that is dreamy and relaxing. The deliberateness of McFerrin’s production is everpresent – no element is extraneous and plays a purpose in the puzzle; after all, McFerrin has been working on several tracks for the better part of a few years. Early Riser features critically acclaimed artists such as Robert Glasper and Thundercat on "Already There" which showcases the restlessness of jazz and its instrumentation and Emily King on "Decisions", a mystic production where King floats easily in and out of McFerrin’s musical elements. Though majorly featured as a producer and composer throughout, McFerrin takes the vocal on "Florasia" that shines in its simplicity and is one of the album’s best. Even with the time McFerrin has taken to put together this album, the flow is seamless and being just his first, I’m sure we’ll hear more from McFerrin…if we can get out of the musical trance of Early Riser.
